Could somebody please tell me

why the French call gear hobs "mother strawberries"?

This has been bugging me all day.

Gear hobs are a tool used to cut and shape gears (we have to proofread documents about them sometimes). They call them "fraises-mères", so my guess is that there's a second definition of "fraise" in the dictionary that has nothing to do with strawberries. But I'm too lazy to go look it up. ;)
