...that I know nothing about music. Or, more precisely, let's assume that I know nothing about music, with the exception of classical and country and western. And let's assume that I feel like filling in some of the gaps in my knowledge.
Which artists should I check out? Which of their songs should I listen to?

The Beatles. You should start with the Beatles.
Playing for Change - the transformative power of music: If one had to define music as a 3-dimensional object I suspect that most would agree the first dimension would be the inherent creative/artistic talent some people have that enables them to create music (song writers, musicians, singers, recording artists, et al). It follows that the second dimension would be the tremendous enjoyment one gets from listening to their favorite performances by their favorite artist, band, choir, and/or orchestra. The above 2 dimensions of music allow us to be entertained and distracted from the mundain aspects of every day life. However, it is when we add depth that we can experience the third dimension - the transformative power of music. Easy. Check my blog each Friday for the shuffle. Go to YouTube and see if there's a video for any of the songs listed. If there's not, find a video for the same band. Write down the names of folks you like. The alternate step would be for you to go to iTunes and listen to a sample of the song/band.
I listen to pop, rock, alternative, country, American standards, oldies, classic rock - there's lots to choose from.
I agree - start with the Beatles! Also, check out the Doors, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, & Pink Floyd. And, don't forget to check out guitarist Kaki King, and my absolute fav. band - Porcupine Tree. :D
